KILLING ME SWEETLY IV

YOUNG OBESE AND
AT RISK OF DISEASES

In 2006 Dr. Richard Carmona. former US General Surgeon wrote:
“Obesity is the terror within unless we do something about it, the magnitude of the dilemma will dwarf 9-11 or any other terrorist attempt”

Four years latter the situation is worse
Now it is the First Lady Michele Obama who launched in
February 2010 her campaign
“Let’s Move”

The very name of her campaign let us imagine that the solution of the problem
is just “move” burn the calories you ingest and everything will be fine…….

IT IS NOT THAT SIMPLE?

Not only how many calories you ingest are important,
but where these calories come from is paramount.
What you eat and drink,
what your kids eat and drink is TOXIC.
The so called natural fruit juice you give them is loaded
with High Fructose Corm Syrup
HFCS is the major culprit of the silent epidemic of
Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
NAFLD

What do drinks sweetened with aspartame, high fructose corn syrup, and naturally occurring fructose have in common?
Recent studies link them all to NAFLD, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.
Reported in the Journal of Hepatology, a new study found a link between NAFLD and a higher intake of soft drinks and fruit juices.
Dr. Nimer Assy, Director of the Liver Unit at Ziv Medical Center in Haifa, Israel, is a specialist in internal medicine, liver disease and liver transplantation. He reported that people who drink more than a quart of sweetened beverages daily develop fatty liver at five times the rate of those who drink much less. This is a concern because, in the long-term, this liver condition can contribute to heart disease, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.
It was estimated in 2006 that 13% of the children and adolescent living in San Diego County had NAFLD
The overweight and obese children accounted for 81% of the fatty liver cases.

The team found that in 23% of those children with fatty liver, the liver injury was severe enough to produce steatohepatitis, an inflammation caused by fat buildup in the liver.
Over time steatohepatitis can cause progressive liver damage and has important implications for the long term health of children and young adults.

In 2006 Dr. Richard Carmona.
former US General Surgeon wrote:

Study after study are taking their place in a growing lineup of scientific research
demonstrating that consuming high-fructose corn syrup is the fastest way to trash your health.
It is now known without a doubt that sugar in your food, in all it's myriad of forms, is taking a devastating toll.

And fructose in any form -- including high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and crystalline fructose -- is the worst of the worst!

Fructose is a major contributor to:

• Insulin resistance and obesity
• Elevated blood pressure
• Elevated triglycerides and elevated LDL
• Depletion of vitamins and minerals
• Cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cancer, arthritis and even gout

“This dwarfs diabetes in terms of prevalence,” says Jeffrey B. Schwimmer, MD, associate professor of pediatrics in the division of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at University of California, San Diego's department of pediatrics. “There's no question that this is the most chronic, serious consequence of childhood obesity. It deserves way more attention. The majority of children who have NAFLD are undiagnosed.”
Like other medical conditions once found only among adults, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has crept into the pediatric population.
The NAFLD risk for overweight adolescents is of particular concern, according to experts. “Of obese adolescents, between 50 and 75% have NAFLD,” says Ariel Feldstein, MD, a pediatric gastroenterologist specializing in pediatric liver disease at the Cleveland Clinic main campus.
